Steve has almost 30 years’ experience of carrying out and managing geotechnical and ground investigations. For the past seven years, he has been responsible for running the now 240-strong Structural Soils business. Steve started his career in Structural Soils as a graduate geologist in 1988 and has developed and grown his experience with the business. He is involved in many strategic tenders, specifically the commercial security of the bidding process, and ensuring the company’s various departments pull in the same direction.
Director of Engineering Operations South
Adrian has almost 30 years’ experience of carrying out and managing ground investigations. From a geotechnical contracting background Adrian joined Structural Soils in 1994 as a site engineering geologist; he has been a company director since 2007 and is now responsible for Structural Soils’ operations in southern England. He was instrumental in Structural Soils getting involved in rail industry work and, over the last eight years, has also helped the company establish itself in the nuclear new-build and energy sectors. Adrian established the company’s tender team, and he still gets involved with large bids. He is a Chartered Geologist and keenly encourages the company’s staff to gain chartered status.
Director of Engineering Operations North
Jon has 18 years’ experience in ground investigation work in both onshore and near-shore sectors. He established Structural Soils’ Glasgow office when he joined the company in 2008. Jon, a director responsible for Structural Soils’ operations in the northern part of the UK, is mainly involved in the company’s overwater investigations. He is a Chartered Geologist.
Adam, a Chartered Civil Engineer, has over 20 years’ experience in ground investigation, specialising in geotechnical engineering. He has extensive site and project management experience, and has led or contributed to data management, health and safety, quality and training developments within Structural Soils. He is currently responsible for the technical direction of the company, which he joined as a graduate civil engineer in November 1995.
Drilling and plant
Barbara has worked for Structural Soils for 30 years. Latterly, her main responsibility has been to create a national drilling department with associated accounts, structure and systems. The new structure in the drilling department employs experts and trainers in rotary, cable percussion and window sample drilling supplemented by two fitters for routine maintenance and covering breakdowns on site. In addition to the usual drilling capabilities, the department takes pride in offering bespoke solutions to restricted access projects.
Laboratory and in-situ testing
Dr Dimitris Xirouchakis
Director for Laboratories
Dimitris has 20 years’ experience in geomaterials and laboratory testing. He is a technical expert and member of several professional societies, standard organisations and accreditation bodies. Dimitris, who joined Structural Soils in March 2016, is responsible for the geotechnical and materials testing laboratories.
Principal Project Manager
Gerry has 20 years’ experience of managing projects and running high-performing teams. For the last 10 years, he has focused on environmental monitoring and sampling for landfills, contaminated land and construction projects. Gerry has a wide knowledge of techniques and equipment related to gas, vapour, soil and water monitoring. He currently manages a national team of highly competent and driven environmental monitoring technicians that undertake work for RSK teams and a diverse range of external businesses. Gerry joined Structural Soils in 2007.
Site Testing Manager
Sam, based in the Bristol office, is the national site testing manager for Structural Soils. He has overall responsibility for planning and mobilising a team of site technicians, maintaining equipment and working closely with clients to optimise requirements. Sam ensures the team adheres to agreed turnaround times for reporting and provides site-based coverage nationwide.
Business support services
Safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ)
Associate Director for SHEQ Systems, Laboratory Quality Manager and Safety Council Representative
Alison has over 25 years of industry experience and has worked at Structural Soils since 1993 as a laboratory technician initially and now as the coordinator for SHEQ systems and the UKAS-accredited laboratory quality manager.
Her current role includes responsibility for client SHEQ systems management relating to tender support, leading audits for all client and trade association requirements, ongoing SHEQ performance and continuous improvement monitoring and implementation. This role is dedicated to ensuring that Structural Soils meets its client-specified requirements as a contractor and a principal contractor.
Mark, with 20 years’ experience in Structural Soils, specialises in geo-data management and IT. His responsibilities cover all aspects of digital management and delivery within Structural Soils with a remit to develop the data management systems that enable the company to deliver high-quality data in a timely manner. Mark is an active and passionate member of the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) Data Management Working Group, which is involved in producing, maintaining and developing the AGS format. He is a recognised expert in the AGS data format and the gINT data-management software system. Mark manages and mentors a thriving data management team of technically skilled data managers, technicians and processing staff.
Lauren, who joined Structural Soils in October 2016 and is based in Bristol, is the HR advisor for the company’s contracting division. She has a BA (Hons) in Human Resource Management and holds Associate CIPD membership.
Sales and Marketing
Senior Engineering Geologist, Business Development
Eric draws on 26 years’ experience of undertaking and managing geotechnical and geoenvironmental ground investigations nationally and internationally. Since 2013, he has been responsible for technical sales and business development. Before this, he was part of the technical estimating department. Eric’s technical role in Structural Soils focuses on the rail sector. He is an active member of the Geological Society and is currently working towards chartership. Eric joined Structural Soils in 2011.
