Structural Soils, as a RISQS 5* audited supplier, has wide-ranging experience in rail covering high-speed, interurban and commuter services, along with light rail, trams and heritage lines. Structural Soils brings the knowledge and skills required to operate successfully in a highly regulated and safety-conscious industry, and provides high-quality, cost-effective ground investigations.
Working with our own Sentinel coordinator, we are able to provide a large variety of ground investigation works to the rail sector undertaken by our own staff with Network Rail Sentinel personal track safety (PTS) competency certificates.
Structural Soils offers its rail sector services across two main offerings.
RAIL SI provides a comprehensive ground investigation service to the rail sector using dedicated staff and equipment unique to this working environment. We offer alternate solutions tailored to meet your particular project requirements, on projects of all scales.
We have modified our rigs for using on the rail network. Adaptations include lightweight detachable masts, rigs set on self-propelled trolleys, certified lifting points for road–rail vehicle transport (RRV) and detachable basket units for use directly from an RRV boom for rapid deployment or on slopes.
Our main investigation techniques offered to the rail sector include
- Concrete coring
- Auto-ballast sampling
- Window sampling and dynamic probing
- Cable percussive drilling
- Rotary coring
- Cone penetration testing
- In-situ testing, including plate bearing testing, light weight deflectometer, Califiornia bearing ratio and nuclear density
For long-term monitoring installations, RAIL SI+PLUS offers all Structural Soils’ RAIL SI services with the addition of wider ground investigation needs, which clients traditionally often have to source and coordinate from different suppliers. Offering a single point of contact, we can manage a wide range of services to support and progress wider investigations of the rail environment.
Our most popular subsidiary services offered via RAIL SI+PLUS include
- Geospatial surveys – topographical and 3D laser scanning of natural and built structures
- Ecological surveys – pre-works clearance, ecological clerk of works, and route surveys
- Asbestos management, including asbestos in soil, built structure surveys and UKATA-approved training
Our in-house laboratories enable us to carry our own geotechnical and contamination testing, including specific suites required by Network Rail.
