Structural Soils has in recent years become a lead supplier to the nuclear sector. We have worked extensively on existing, decommissioned(ing) and proposed new nuclear developments for a wide range of clients including EDF, Horizon, British Energy and Magnox at over 8 nuclear licensed sites across the UK.
Over the last 3 years we have undertaken preliminary and main/intermediate phase site investigations for EDF Energy at Hinkley Point and Horizon Nuclear Power at Wylfa on Anglesey. These contracts have individually been valued in excess of £1M. The opportunities provided by these high profile contracts have allowed Structural Soils to make huge steps in terms of our technical, quality and reporting standards. Furthermore, the sensitive nature of working on such sites, has encouraged us to make huge investments in Health and Safety Standards both materially and philosophically. Working with the help of our sister company RSK Radiological, we were the 1st UK Site Investigation contractor to embrace and role out Behavioural Safety training to all employees plus all specialist sub-contractors employed on our Nuclear Sites.
Undertaking these specialist and complex contracts has enabled us to expand the array of both in-situ and laboratory testing in-house and in particular it has enabled us to create a specialist and comprehensive in-house geotechnical testing laboratory. These contracts have also enabled Structural Soils to further develop and build close relationships with specialist sub-contractors and we are now confident that we can comfortably undertake any testing or exploration methodology which is asked of us.
Our investigations for the Nuclear sector have been specified with both factual and interpretive report end products.
