Structural Soils wins Project of the Year

On 10 June, Structural Soils won Ground Investigation Project of the Year at the Ground Engineering Awards 2015.

The highly contested award, won jointly with Horizon Nuclear Power and Atkins, was for the detailed onshore ground investigation of the nuclear new-build site at Wylfa Newydd in Anglesey, North Wales.

“This award recognises a great team effort,” says Adrian Barby-Moule, Structural Soils director and Wylfa Newydd ground investigation project director. “We are extremely grateful to our staff and partners for the hard work they put into this project.”

The ground investigation was performed in an area of complex and technically demanding ground conditions. More than 300 boreholes were drilled, some up to 180 m deep. A total of 18.5 km of drilling was completed and 12.5 km of rock core was produced. At the peak of activity, there were 18 drilling rigs on-site. All the work was completed to the satisfaction of the client and on time. The judges commented that they were impressed by the project management and handling of data for a contract of this size.

Project of the Year is awarded for completed ground investigation schemes that excelled in innovation, sustainability, health and safety, and value engineering. The winners have to demonstrate that exceptional measures were taken to deliver the project above the expected standard.

Structural Soils and United Utilities were also shortlisted for their ground investigation work at Anchorsholme, Blackpool, and were finalists in the Ground Investigation Specialist of the Year category.
