- CONTAMINATED SITE STUDIES -Structural Soils undertakes all aspects of contaminated site studies including desk studies, intrusive testing and sampling, laboratory testing and reporting. The main industry regulators are the Environment Agency and the Environmental Health Departments at local councils. The geo-environmental department of the company liaises with these bodies (and with the NHBC) with regard to their requirements for individual sites and thus has a good overall understanding of their requirements for all types of sites.
The entire investigation process often begins with a desk study (Phase 1) to establish the full history of a site and the nature of contamination that may be present from former usage of a site.
This is usually followed by an intrusive investigation (Phase 2) consisting of trial pits, boreholes etc to obtain soil and water samples for testing. These samples are then analysed for a range of contaminants which may possibly be present on the site. The results of the sitework and laboratory analysis are then collated to form a comprehensive report. 'Qualitative Risk Assessments' are undertaken for the site with respect to the risks to humans, water resources, plants, etc, and recommendations are given concerning the work required (e.g. remediation) to reduce the risks to acceptable levels. For undertaking more detailed 'Quantitative Risk Assessments', the company works closely with a specialist multi disciplinary geo-environmental and environmental consultancy. The company advises on contamination remediation strategies and advice is also given regarding the classification of surplus spoil for off-site disposal.
Phase 3 work includes the site supervision of remediation works and the validation of such work. Staff are available to monitor sites during site preparation and construction for unforeseen contamination. When significant contamination requires complex remediation strategies, the company works closely with a specialist remediation contractor/consultant.
Our geo-environmental consultancy work also includes the assessment and interpretation of reports undertaken by others. Environmental & Historical Desk StudiesThe company has extensive experience of undertaking environmental and historical desk studies. These utilise high-quality site-centred Ordnance Survey historical mapping from the late nineteenth century to the present day, and also include comprehensive environmental database searches. Such studies enable us to determine if the site and surrounding area have been subject to potentially contaminative use and also give information on aspects such as landfills, radon potential, watercourses, aquifers and public water supply abstractions. Environmental Site InvestigationIntrusive site investigation work utilises various techniques including trial pitting, dynamic (window) sampling, cable percussion drilling and rotary drilling. Standpipes can be installed for monitoring groundwater and soil gases. We have investigated numerous types of development including petrol stations, factories, landfills, timber treatment works, scrap yards and foundries.
Environmental ConsultancyWe have extensive consultancy experience in the redevelopment of brownfield land. We can assist with the design, supervision and validation of the remediation process. We also liaise with local authorities and the Environment Agency during investigation and remediation. Risk assessments can be undertaken to ensure that remediation projects address all the issues that may give cause for concern.
Contamination Testing
The chemical testing of soil, water and gas samples is arranged by Structural Soils Ltd, utilising a laboratory that possesses the MCERTS and UKAS accreditation that the industry regulators require.
